As BookTok lovers, we at Enamoured Books love a romantic TikTok trend. And the trend we think is the most romantic is romanticising your life. This phrase relates to making the mundane events feel unique, not just special or occasional events. It is all about having mindfulness and intention behind your actions. This trend goes hand in hand with looking out for the beauty around you and appreciating the small joys which might normally pass you by.
Since the trend originally took off, various ways people have been seen to be romanticising their lives include taking their time with activities they would normally rush through, taking themselves on a date, planning the perfect day out, making a list of simple pleasures and acting on this, or savouring their drinks and meal.
Ashely Ward originally blessed us with this trend in 2020, and blessing it is because psychologists have been weighing in on this trend with all the positive benefits it has. For example, a New York Times article describes this trend as a new way of exploring mindfulness, by allowing yourself to become more present and engaged. Many people think mindfulness is all about meditation and breathing exercises, but in realty it is about being aware of what is happening around you without judgement.
Whilst your feed might not be as overwhelmed with this trend 5 years down the track, it is still very much alive and well. This is likely because even though this is a new(ish) trend, it is not a new concept. An article from Self discusses how romanticising your life relates to traditional buddhist practices for example. Another traditional practice which is similar is the Danish tradition of hugge, which is all about contentment, taking time away from the rush and instead being with love ones and enjoying life's quieter moments. We also have the positive psychology concept of savouring, which is all about getting enjoyment out of managing your positive emotions. The list goes on, but what we are hearing is the TikTok girlies were on to something.
A common overlap with romanticising your life, is becoming the main character of your own story - something we are big on here at Enamoured Books. While this trend began as a way to poke fun at movie cliches, overtime it has evolved into a reminder that you can drive your own narrative. While an element of this trend has been for people to regain a sense of agency through the pandemic, it has also helped people to live authentically. People are able to accept the highs and lows of life, as these are all part of the main characters story. People are not allowing their life to pass them by, instead they are making the most of the small moments regardless of if people are watching.
One of the reasons we love these two trends, is they are of the more accessible ones out there. You do not need money or materialistic objects to keep up with this. Rather it is all about the little things in life that you already have around you, such as going for a walk without your headphones so you can be immersed in nature or getting caught in the rain and laughing about it like the queen herself Drew Barrymore. You also don't need much time to make the most of this trend. Sometimes maybe all you need is to sit and enjoy your breakfast as you read a chapter of your book, rather than as you are running out the door. The best way to make the most of this trend is turning to what you already have in life, instead of the constant pressure to add to your life like other trends bring.
Whether out drinking with friend, having an adventurous memory making moment, on a quiet hot girl walk, laughing with friends over a coffee at the beach, or just closing your eyes and taking in the morning sun, you are always the main character of your own story. One way we love to romanticise our lives is by strolling through Enamoured with an iced coffee from Enamoured Delights, grabbing a brand new book to add to our collection and read it curled up in one of our comfortable couches.
Enamoured was created with just this in mind. We wanted people to have an opportunity to become the main character of their own story and feel like they are in their own romance novel. So please grab a coffee and stroll through Enamoured's shelves as you find your next read. Enamoured was after all, curated just for you.
Love, Enamoured x
