They All Fall in Love at the End

It’s the fall of 2024 and 24-year-old Cat isn’t asking for too much: all she wants is three boyfriends, to write her little autofictive novels, and to make it through the presidential election. She’s in a long-distance open relationship with her college sweetheart Jay, but polyamory isn’t a trendy essay in The Cut to her. It’s tied to a larger project of freedom. When Trump wins, Cat quickly finds that white feminists and Barbie were wrong: she can’t have it all, not as a Black woman living at the beginning of the end of democracy in the nation’s capital.

But she’s willing to blow up her life trying.

While tensions over the war in Gaza and the new administration's policies roil the campus where Cat's slowly getting her MFA, Cat finds herself falling for the one person who’s off-limits: Jay’s best friend, Tristan, who’s not exactly a fan of ethical nonmonogamy. And then she falls for the other person who’s off-limits: Tristan’s girlfriend, Nia, a dizzying and charming art student.

As Cat falls for all the wrong people, racking up lies and betrayals, she tries to write her way through to her own happy ending. But in art, politics, and love, true liberation may take more than rewriting the old scripts. It may mean finding a new form altogether.
